Overview

Background

Westfund, an Australian health insurer focused on regional communities, sought to develop My Health Assist, apreventative care app to help members manage their health through personalised plans, rewards, and check-ups.

Faced with healthcare access challenges in remote areas and rising cost-of-living pressures, Westfund’s transformation office engaged us for a year-long research partnership. We conducted deep discovery—30+ member interviews, SME discussions, journey maps, and opportunity framing—to uncover unmet needs and evidence-based product opportunities.

Activities

  • User research & rapid prototyping

  • Proposition testing

  • Survey design & analysis

My role

  • Product designer

Challenge

After months of discovery, one concept stood out. The team was eager to dive into UI development, but we saw an opportunity to pause and de-risk. Which assumptions were still untested? Which ones were critical to the product’s success? We decided to validate the riskiest points before committing to build—covering data privacy comfort, notification expectations, and the features members valued most. The goal: a high-fidelity prototype tested quickly with real users to ensure the MVP would be both desirable and feasible.

Approach

Hypothesis-driven design sprint & rapid UI

Mapped the foundational flow, onboarding sequence, and required inputs through whiteboarding and co-design workshops. In partnership with another product designer, built a high-fidelity prototype and lean design system for speed and consistency.

Research-ready testing setup & playback

Linked the prototype to Maze, designing targeted tasks and survey questions to probe privacy concerns, feature appeal, and notification preferences. Captured over 300 survey responses and 1.5 hours of raw behavioural data from 25+ unmoderated sessions. Distilled these into 15+ high-impact business and product insights, presented to Westfund leadership to guide MVP definition.

Outcome

By investing just two weeks in rapid prototyping and testing, we gave Westfund confidence that My Health Assist would launch with features its members actually value, saving time, reducing costly rework, and setting the MVP on a proven path to market.

  • 300+ survey responses and 1.5 hours of raw behavioural data

  • 25+ unmoderated sessions with real members

  • 15+ validated product & business insights feeding directly into MVP scope
